Why Donating to SMSF is Imperative

Have you ever wondered why donating to SMSF is essential? Or what would happen to SMUSD without the Foundation’s support and commitment?

During the 17-18 Annual Campaign year, donations funded 21 teaching positions across all four school sites. Without these SMSF donations and funding from other local sources, like the PTAs and Parcel Taxes, class sizes would skyrocket (see Figure 1 below) because SMUSD receives some of the lowest public funding in the state of California. In 2017-2018, San Marino received, approximately, $9,067 per student. That is $5,000 less than LA Unified and $2,500 less than the California State average (see Figure 2 below).

Why does SMUSD receive such low state funding? The answer is simply: the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) calculates state funding to Districts on specific criteria based on student information. Districts with high numbers of students who are on a free or reduced lunch program, are in foster youth programs, and/or are English Language learners receive more state funding. This is why San Marino schools and student rely heavily on parent and community support.

To everyone who has donated to SMSF so far this year, thank you. For those who haven’t, there is still time to support during the 18-19 Annual Campaign to ensure that San Marino schools receive the funding needed to provide quality education to our students. You may donate online here, call the Foundation Office at 626-299-7014 to give over the phone, or send in a check to the SMSF office located at 1665 West Drive in San Marino.

Thank you for your consideration.
