Registration Is Now Open – Support SMSF Today!

It is hard to believe, but registration for the 2019-2020 school year is officially underway! Can you believe that summer is almost over?

During First Day Packets, all parents have the opportunity to support their child’s educational journey by giving to the San Marino Schools Foundation. SMSF is vital to the health of SMUSD, and our sole goal is to continue empowering excellence in our schools by closing the state funding gap presented by the passing of Prop 13 in 1978 and the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) in 2013.

Prop 13 changed the tax structure in the state of California. San Marino’s property taxes no longer get returned to the city and our schools, but instead, are kept at the state level to be distributed at their discretion. The LCFF is a funding formula that determines state funding amounts based on student enrollment. Districts who have a higher number of students enrolled in free or reduced lunch programs, are in foster youth programs, and/or students who are English Language learner receive higher amounts of state funding. Since SMUSD has a low student enrollment in these three categories, we receive approximately $9,000 per student. This is 38% lower than Los Angeles Unified

SMUSD and SMSF look to the parents and community to make up the difference. Due to local support, including both parcel taxes and SMSF, SMUSD can spend approximately $13,000 per student allowing for more teaching positions and academically enriching programs. However, none of this would be possible without your support.

2017-2018 per Pupil Funding Numbers

During registration, support, at any level, is strongly encouraged. Our goal this year is 100% parent participation. If donating directly through registration is not an option, that is okay. SMSF accepts pledges, and our staff works with all families to figure out the best payment plan for them. Any donation or pledge, no matter the amount, is essential for our students’ successes.

We hope we can count on you to help close the gap in state funding by donating or pledging during the 2019-2020 First Day Packet Registration.
