The Executive Director will be responsible for overall guidance and management of the SMSF including fundraising, administration, finances and programs. The ideal candidate is a dynamic, thoughtful and collaborative leader who has a strong background in fund development, community engagement, K-12 educational policy, and has demonstrated cultural competency in working with ethnically diverse constituencies. The Executive Director will report to and work closely with the Board of SMSF to inspire and ensure a growing SMSF for future generations of students.
About San Marino Schools Foundation
The San Marino Schools Foundation (SMSF) was founded in 1980 to provide financial support to the San Marino Unified School District for its four schools Carver Elementary, Valentine Elementary, Huntington Middle School and San Marino High School. In 2016-17, SMSF raised over $2.5 million to provide salaries for over 20 full time teachers.
San Marino’s schools are the hallmark of our city. Generations of students have passed through our district’s classrooms, then to college and on to later success. San Marino’s civic reputation and strong real estate market have continuously risen in part due to the extraordinary quality of its public schools, with many families choosing San Marino specifically for the excellent education their children will receive. We are justifiably proud of our public schools, and are very thankful for the foresight and generosity of those who have preceded us.
Due to public school funding structure designated by the State of California, San Marino receives less than other districts because it does not qualify for additional funding based on District demographics such as socio economics. Therefore, the Foundation relies heavily on the support and resources of San Marino’s parents, residents, businesses and community organizations. These funds are directly allocated to the budget item that makes the biggest impact on our children: hiring additional teachers. Donations to SMSF helps fund, on average, 6 teachers at each school site, teachers the district would not have been able to retain otherwise. This results in smaller class sizes and broader, innovative curriculum offerings.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Expand the donor base and develop new sources of funding for unrestricted gifts, and to support special projects, general endowment and major capital campaigns.
- Strategize with staff and Board leadership on the timing and marketing approach for the Annual Fund that will meet the goals established by the Board of Directors for both restricted and unrestricted gifts.
- Cultivate, solicit and steward major donors.
- Create partnerships with existing and new corporate sponsors.
- Assemble, draft, update and maintain complex information, background on donors and prospective donors.
- Research, write and strategize the proposals for support of endowment or other special purposes, including capital improvements.
- Coordinate staff to host annual donor recognition events.
- Oversee SMSF budget, including reconciling all gifts and pledges.
- Design and oversee annual fund and capital campaign strategies.
- Serve as staff for the Development and Communications Committees of the Board to coordinate fundraising brand, message, and activities.
- Work with board leadership to create, communicate, and implement the organization’s vision, mission, and overall direction.
- Work with board chair and committee leadership to plan the agenda and materials for board meetings.
- Engage and facilitate board participation.
- Create and present reports and updates to the Board of Directors on fundraising and other strategic initiatives.
- Facilitate the recruitment and orientation of new board members.
- Solicit advice and guidance, when appropriate, from Board of Directors.
- Recruit, train, inspire, engage and retain staff and volunteers.
Community Engagement (25%)
- Serve as the primary voice of the organization at schools, orientations, community and donor engagement activities.
- Communicate with various constituencies through multiple modalities including social media, with parents, alumni and supporters on a regular basis.
- Represent SMSF and build relationships in the school and broader community by attending various events and meetings.
- Serve as the primary liaison with the school district board members and administrators as well as city council members and administrators.
- Develop and maintain relationships with state and local elected representatives to advocate for additional funding for our district.
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced or professional degree
- Knowledge of education policies and public funding for schools.
- Seven to ten years of proven record fundraising with nonprofit organizations, in particular, leading fundraising program
- Personal integrity, high energy, effective communication with a passion for the mission of SMSF.
- Successful supervisory experience motivating staff and volunteers.
- Extensive experience working with volunteer boards and committees.
- Thorough knowledge of community engagement and public advocacy.
- Cultural awareness and competency in working with diverse constituents in particular with the Asian and Asian American communities.
- Strong management skills with a demonstrated ability to plan, organize, lead, and provide feedback to staff.
- Ability to articulate and communicate with clarity and influence.
Base salary commensurate with nonprofit organization salary benchmarks and experience in the nonprofit/education sectors.
